Modern extension on listed house in Clare

Our clients loved their listed house in Clare and painstakingly refurbished the historic structure and fabric… but it lacked a space that could properly relate to the rear gardens.

We persuaded conservation officers to accept our designs for a contemporary extension, designed to retain the ability to ‘read’ how the building had evolved (rather than seeking to blend with the existing style). However, we used a large brick flank wall to tie both elements together, then flooded the new space with light to penetrate deeper into the old building.

Entirely concealed from public view, the character of the conservation area is preserved, while the owners enjoy their inside-outside living space.
