Three handsome houses; Clare, Suffolk

Set in the centre of the historic market town of Clare, in a setting comprising many listed buildings, Burlington House was a large, but unattractive, 1970s dwelling occupying a generous plot. The client wanted to construct a new home for their family, but for tis to be delivered as part of a more extensive redevelopment of the site.

Drawing on key elements of the local vernacular, the development comprises three, individually designed, traditional-style houses, accessed via a shared drive. At planning stage, there were several letters of local objection, but the local Parish Council were very supportive, as were the planning and conservation officers. Once completed, the local reaction has been very positive — a fitting development in the heart of a much-loved conservation area.
